If you are applying for the passport for the first time in your life, then you should do it in person at the local passport office. Also, if you are under the age of 16 years, then you should be applying in person.

Furthermore, if you held a passport when you were under 16 years of age and now you are reapplying for it, then also you should do so in person.

Other conditions where you should be applying in person are if your passport has been lost or stolen or damaged, or if it was issued more than fifteen years ago and also if you have had a name change. The procedure varies based on the age and on the classification of minors and adults.

When a person is filling out the passport application form, he should make sure that he has not left any blank fields and also provided correct and accurate information. The passport authorities check each and every detail furnished on the form for correctness and truth. Also, the photographs should be the same size and shape as mentioned in the passport application form. You should furnish the birth certificate and residence proof in correct order to get the passport.

An incomplete or incorrect form can be discarded and you may end up not getting your passport. However, every person born in the United States has the legal right to get the passport as the citizen of the country. Unless you have committed an unpardonable crime, every US citizen has the right to get a passport.
