How Long Until Food Poisoning Symptoms Start

Food poisoning is very generic expression that embraces a host of gastrointestinal illnesses. The first symptoms invariably are nausea, vomiting, cramping and loose motions. Depending upon the toxin or organism responsible and the quantity ingested, these symptoms are manifested in as little as 30 minutes after consumption of contaminated food or drink, or in certain cases can prolong over several weeks.

By and large gastrointestinal attacks are of a minor nature and generally play the course within 48 hours. Hence, very rarely is the actual cause identified through a culture, unless a large number of people are affected of the incident of epidemic proportions.

Viruses are the commonest cause of food poisoning. A virus infection generally starts with headache and pain in the joints then progresses to nausea, vomiting and loose motions accompanied possibly with fever. The illness usually last for between 24 and 48 hours.

Bacteria, on the other hand, produce toxic substances when entering the intestines which cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Depending on the type of bacteria that is the cause, the toxins may or may not damage the intestines. But the usual affects associated with food poisoning are evident.

Parasites are usually ingested through untreated or contaminated water. The symptoms are lasting but mild.

Toxic agents are passed through improperly cooked foods of a toxic nature like certain types of mushrooms, shell fish and seafood. Such cases are fairly uncommon.

Usually the diagnosis and treatment of food poisoning is based on the prevailing circumstances and the symptoms displayed. In certain extreme case of bacterial infection, the illness could go on for several weeks deteriorating with the passage of time.
