How Much Is Pain And Suffering Worth ?

It is nearly impossible to quantify or measure pain and suffering. Hence, its worth is difficult to determine.

There are no rules or formulas to quantify pain and suffering. The physiological effects can vary from person to person. It is highly subjective. Usually, the personal injury attorneys use the medical bill or hard costs as a yardstick to calculate the pain and suffering cost or the general damages cost.As a thumb rule, they multiply the bills with a factor of 2 or 3 or sometimes even 4. For example, if the medical bill and other associated expenses for treating an injury works out to $2,000, then the pain and suffering due to the injury can vary anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000, as calculated by most personal injury attorneys.

But calculating the worth of pain and suffering in this manner may not be the best method or even an accurate method. There can be cases where you could have an injury with medical bills of $2,000, but the pain and suffering be worth much more than three or even four times that value. For example, a teenaged or a young girl may suffer a facial injury in the form of a cut on her face, leaving a scar from her eye to her chin. The medical bills and related expenses for stitches and cleaning the wound might not be very high, but the psychological trauma or lifetime of emotional suffering as a result of growing up with such an injury could be worth much more.
