How Much Time Do You Have To Pay A Traffic Ticket

A traffic ticket is of two types -- one for a moving violation and the other for a non-moving violation. The ticket is issued by a police officer when he or she feels that the driver has violated or infringed traffic laws and rules. Sometimes there is no other alternative but to give a person a traffic ticket.

In most cases, it is not necessary that the driver is an unsafe one but traffic tickets can impact the driver negatively. For instance, his insurance cost can go up or he can lose his driving license if he racks up to many traffic tickets. Some states in the US have point systems where points are designated for each traffic infringement and when the points reach a particular level, the driver has his license revoked.

A traffic ticket is processed by the jurisdiction where the offense was committed. It has nothing to do with the license issuing authority. A person usually has two options available and they are paying the fine or contesting the ticket in court.

So, if you get a traffic ticket, how much time do you have to pay? Usually a traffic ticket will contain the date by which the fine has to be paid. In general, the due date is the last working day before the offender has to appear in court. If the person does not pay the fine, it is assumed that he or she will be present in court. On the other hand, if the person neither pays the fine nor appears in court, it is quite possible that the presiding judge may ask the police to issue a warrant of arrest against the person for not appearing in court.
