Cell Phone And Traffic Accidents

Several studies and surveys have shown that cell phones are a major cause for car crashes.

Although research has shown that the use of a cell phone does not impact a driver’s ability to control his car, enough research has not been done from the distraction point of view.According to the New England Journal of Medicine, it is estimated that drivers distracted due to a cell phone call are four times more likely to be involved in a car accident. According to a Harvard University study, over 200 deaths are caused due to cell phones along with half a million injuries each year.

Drivers, especially in teen drivers, use cell phones or send text messages while driving, which can cause distraction. In fact, in 2007 alone, driver distractions, such as using a cell phone or text messaging, contributed to nearly 1,000 crashes involving 16- and 17-year-old drivers.

  • In the year 2002, the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis calculated that 2,600 people die each year as a result of using cell phones while driving. They estimated that another 330,000 are injured due to the use of cell phones behind the wheel.
  • According to the reports by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, drivers' response to brake lights on the vehicle ahead is 18 percent slower when they are talking on cell phone.
  • Hence, from the above statistics, it is clear that answering a phone call and/or messaging a text while driving can lead to both distraction and driver inattention, making it the leading cause of car accidents.
