Traffic Accidents Statistics  

A recent insurance company advertisement playing on television showed that at an average a single person is killed in a car accident every ten seconds in the United States. If the statistic is correct, it implies that roughly five and a quarter million auto accidents take place each year in the US.

As per certain other reports, death due to a traffic accident is the sixth leading preventable cause of death in the United States, with an estimated 45,800 people having lost their lives and 2.4 million injured in 2005 alone in traffic related accidents.

The following is a list of accidents classified in terms of type of crash, which occurred in the U.S.A. in the year 2005:

  • About 1,824,000 crashes took place in which the rear of the vehicle was damaged. This type of crash accounted for 29.6 percent of all crashes, and 5.4 percent of fatal crashes in the same year in US.
  • About 1,779,000 crashes took place in which the side of the vehicle was damaged. This type of crash accounted for 28.9 percent of all crashes, and 20.7 percent of fatal crashes.
  • About 992,000 crashes took place, which were run-off-road collisions. This type of crash accounted for 16.1 percent of all crashes, and 31.7 percent of fatal crashes.
  • About 275,000 crashes took place due to collision with animals. This type of crash accounted for 4.5 percent of all crashes, and 0.4 percent of fatal crashes.
  • About 275,000 crashes took place in which the vehicle rolled over. This type of crash accounted for 2.3 percent of all crashes, and 10.9 percent of fatal crashes.
  • About 123,000 crashes took place due to head-on collision with another vehicle. This type of crash accounted for only 2 percent of all crashes, but 10.1 percent of fatal crashes.
  • About 114,000 crashes involved collisions with pedestrians and bicyclists. This type of crash accounted for only 1.8 percent of all crashes, but 13.5 percent of fatal crashes.
