But many of these are accompanied by some or other side effects which make the condition of the patient sometimes miserable. If the disease is diagnosed early, the solid tumors can be removed with the help of surgery. The post operative affects like acute pain, nausea can be cured by acupuncture. Studies have given reports that the patient's overall condition improves by acupuncture and nutritional supplements. Therefore, acupuncture has become a routine procedure in the cancer institutes.
If the diagnosis is late or the tumor reoccurs after surgery and also if the type of cancer is germinal such as Hodgkin's lymphoma, then the treatment is chemotherapy, radiation therapy, bone marrow transplant, or stem cell transplant. All these are done singly or in combination. In this group of patients, the role of acupuncture is more of palliative nature. It addresses the side effects of these treatments.
