Most of the birthmarks are absolutely safe and are even considered as ‘beauty spots’ if present in certain parts in females. However, at times, birthmarks become cancerous, posing a serious threat to health of the individual. In such cases, it is advisable to get them removed surgically as soon as possible.
There are numerous warning signs that begin to appear when a harmless birthmark suddenly turns malignant. Here are the most common among them:
- Birthmarks are usually black, brown, or light bluish in color. However, a cancerous birthmark or a melanoma is multi-colored, with combined shades of black, blue, brown, red, and/or white.
- Unlike a harmless birthmark that has a definite edge, the malignant ones often have an uneven or irregular border.
- Birthmarks that suddenly grow asymmetrical are also a cause of concern.
These common signs of cancerous birthmarks are often termed as the ‘ABCD symptoms’, with ‘A’ referring to Asymmetry in shape; ‘B’ referring to Border irregular; ‘C’ referring to Color varied; and ‘D’ referring to Diameter increase. Thus, if you notice any abnormal change in color, size, or shape of your birthmark, get in touch with your doctor immediately.
Birthmarks that look normal initially but abruptly begin to grow in size are highly likely to be cancerous in nature. They can result in severe ulceration, obstructions, and other complications, and must be diagnosed immediately by standard urine tests. If detected at an early stage, they are easy to treat using medications that tend to block formation of newer blood vessels.
