Exercises To Prevent Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are the bane of many men and women. One of the answers to this is exercising the legs especially the lower calf muscles to stimulate circulation.

But many refrain from exercising believing this will worsen their problem. Here are some moderate leg exercises that will help relieve varicose veins and the pain associated with them.

Exercise To Prevent Varicose Veins:

Calf stretching: Stand on the balls of your feet, on the edge of a step or something raised. Raise and lower your heels as far as they will go. Do 40 reps to stretch the back of the calf muscles.

Pedaling: Lie on your back on the floor supporting yourself with your hands.  Raise your legs and pedal as if riding a bicycle.

Tip-toes: Walk around the house on tip-toes to stretch the calves.

Heel-walk: Walk around the house on heels.

Raising the legs: Lie flat on your back on the floor. Raise legs straight-out alternately, and hold them in the air for as long as you can to improve circulation in the legs.

Knee-bends: Lie flat on the floor on your back with legs stretched out. Pull one leg up, the knee towards your chest. Hold the leg behind the knee and flex your foot. Repeat with the other leg and alternate for several repetitions. This routine exercises the entire leg.

After doing any leg exercises including lengthy walking or standing, it is recommended that the legs be kept raised above the heart for about 10 minutes or so. This posture reduces the risk of varicose veins.
