A transient ischemic attack or TIA is also known as a mini stroke. In the case of a transient ischemic attack, it lasts only for a few minutes. However, it occurs when the amount of blood supply to a particular part of the brain is briefly stopped or interrupted due to a small blood clot.
Mini stroke symptoms, which usually appear all of a sudden, are very similar to the symptoms of stroke. However, the symptoms do not last as long as the regular stroke. Most of the symptoms of a mini stroke disappear as quickly as they appear. Invariably the symptoms disappear within an hour but in some cases they can persist for up to 24 hours.
Symptoms of a mini stroke include a sudden difficulty with vision, speaking, behavior, and understanding.
A mini stroke can occur prior to the ischemic stroke and it invariably happens in about 60 percent of the cases. It further will develop into a stroke within the next 5 years of the occurrence of a mini stroke.
That is why treatment for a mini stroke is very important. Since the stroke occurs as a result of a blood clot mainly, doctors usually prescribe anticoagulants like aspirin initially to treat the condition. Aspirin works on the quality of the blood and makes it thin in consistency. Watery blood cannot form clots and so the normal flow of blood is maintained. To treat mini strokes, a milder dosage of drug like aspirin is used. Usually strong medication is usually avoided.
