Vascular risk factors that are associated with metabolic stress, like diabetes, below normal levels of high-density lipoprotein or HDL, and high levels of homocysteine indicate that they can lower the chances of stroke recovery.

Some studies found that individuals who have diabetes, along with low levels of HDL cholesterol, and high homocysteine and also had a mild ischemic stroke were twice likely to face disability after a stroke. In addition, researchers have found that the recovery process was very difficult in individuals who were older than 57 years.

The process of vitamin intervention also has been studied in stroke patients. It was found that people who were given vitamins like B12 showed a faster recovery rate. The total plasma levels could be lowered using folic acid and vitamin B12 combinations and therefore, the HDL cholesterol could be lowered.

The study was conducted as an analysis for Vitamin Intervention for Stroke Prevention. It was used to determine whether by lowering the plasma levels like homocysteine using large doses of folic acid, pyridoxine, and vitamin B12, the recurrence of stroke could be reduced.

It has been found that it is possible to lower the serum homocysteine using large doses of B12. Other vitamins that were also helpful were B6, and folic acid.  So, this could play a major role in reducing the risk of heart stroke.

However, the same research also concluded that the vitamins played a more important role in the after recovery process more than prevention of stroke. These vitamins help in increasing blood production and making up the loss of acids in the body.
