Out of all the gynecological cancers, ovarian cancer is the second most prevalent cancer. Usually the cancer does not show symptoms in the early stages and that is why when women are diagnosed, they are invariably in the advanced stages of the disease.
Ovarian cancer is treated using three types of treatment and these include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Each treatment has its own side effects.
Nearly all cases of ovarian cancer undergo surgery. Surgery is required not just for forming a diagnosis but also for staging the cancer and debulking. Debulking refers to the procedure of removing as much of the tumor as possible.
Once the cancer has been diagnosed, the woman will be advised to have a surgery, which can include a total hysterectomy, complete removal of the ovary and the lymphatic system if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes along with debulking. Very often, to ensure that no cancer cells remain, bowel and diaphragm resections are done using stapling devices.
Many women can end up with scar tissue, also known as adhesions, at the site of the surgery. The scar tissue can form even on the fallopian tubes. This leads to severe scar tissue pain and if not treated, it can become chronic. Usually when a woman has ovarian cancer and scar tissue pain, she is simple abdominal exercises that help in pain reduction and also strengthen the abdominal muscles. In addition, friction massage is also recommended to help with scar tissue pain.
However, if the scar tissue pain persists, the woman may have to undergo a laparotomy so that the doctor can remove the adhesions. Laparotomy is a surgical procedure that requires making an incision in the lower part of the abdomen using which the doctor can check the abdominal cavity to see where the problem lies. It is done under general anesthesia and requires a hospital stay from 2 days to 4 days. After a laparotomy, a woman can return to normal activities in around 3 to 4 weeks.
