Sexual Side Effects From Chemotherapy

A variety of side effects such as hair loss, weight loss and dry skin are caused due to chemotherapy. Of all the several side effects produced during chemotherapy, sexual side effects are the ones that cause significant psychological damage to a person’s self-belief and self-esteem. Chemotherapeutic drugs can also cause significant damage to the sexual organs and sexual functioning in both men and women.

Sexual side effects during chemotherapy are different among men and women. Some common side effects experienced by men include impotency where a man is unable to keep an erection, gynecomastia in which men develop breast tissue, and loss of sexual desire. Chemotherapeutic drugs lower the number of sperm cells and their mobility, a side-effect that might result in temporary or permanent infertility in men.

Women experience sexual side effects while being treated for breast cancer or other gynecological cancers such as ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, cervical cancer, bladder cancer or colorectal cancer. These side effects include damage to the ovaries causing permanent or temporary infertility, irregular menstrual periods, sudden loss of estrogen production leading to menopause, hot flashes, dry vagina and experiencing pain and discomfort during intercourse.

Another important side effect of chemotherapy is the feeling about sexuality. While some people experience an increased desire for sexual activity, others have a severely reduced sexual desire. Most important reason for this is the physical and emotional stress that a person undergoes while going through chemotherapy. Hormonal changes also play a major role in causing psychological disturbances towards sexuality. Pregnancy is not advisable while undergoing chemotherapy because many anti-cancer drugs are known to cause developmental defects in the embryo.
