Survival Rates For Men With Stage 4 Prostate Cancer

Prostate gland is a walnut-sized tubule-alveolar exocrine gland associated with the male reproductive system. The primary function of this gland is to store and produce seminal fluid that is used for nourishing sperms. Prostate cancer can be defined as abnormal proliferation of cells inside the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting men around the world. Around 30,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the United States. However, the number of patients succumbing to prostate cancer or the survival rate depends on the stage of the cancer.

Prognosis or the chances of survival from prostate cancer is difficult to predict because the growth of cancer cells is dependant on numerous factor. Gleason score is used to grade the cancer. If the Gleason score is of 2, 3 or 4, then the cancer is in initial stage or a low grade prostate cancer. An intermediate stage prostate cancer is indicated by a Gleason score of 5, 6 or 7. A Gleason score of 8, 9 or 10 indicates the most advanced stage of cancer or high grade prostate cancer. All these grades indicate the growth of cancer cells.

A high grade cancer is likely to grow rapidly and become malignant. This advanced stage of cancer is sometimes called as the T4 stage. Advanced stage prostate cancer occurs in almost 20 percent of patients. Out of every 3 patients, only 1 patient survives for more than five years. During this stage, chances of cancer cells spreading and affecting other organs is even greater. Secondaries such as bone metastases are quite common during the fourth stage of prostate cancer. The average survival of a patient with stage 4 prostate cancer is 1-3 years. Survival rate is dependant on whether the patient is undergoing treatment or not. Patients who are undergoing a course of chemotherapy and radiation or even a prostatectomy can extend their survival by 2 years. In the absence of treatment, patients will succumb within 6 to 9 months.
