Infant Red Eye :   

The probability of suffering from any kind of eye infection or problem is higher among infants and children than adults. There are many reasons for common eye related problems and these can be allergies, irritation, and/or infections. The most common infection prevalent in infants is infant red eye. Infant red eye is also known as conjunctivitis.

What is conjunctivitis? It occurs when the membranes covering the surface of the eyes react to bacteria, viruses and may other toxic agents. The most common forms of conjunctivitis among children are bacterial and viral conjunctivitis.

The main cause of infant red eye is viral infection. Viral red eye or pink eye is a form of conjunctivitis that is usually associated with watery discharge. It is highly contagious and must be correctly detected and treated. This type of red eye is usually associated with infection of the cornea.

The most common bacteria that cause infant red eye are streptococcus, pneumococcus and staphylococcus. Infants may usually have symptoms like redness of the eyes, pain in the eyes, yellowish or greenish discharge and swelling.

There are many kinds of conjunctivitis among infants. The bacterial pink eye is most common among newborn babies. This type of conjunctivitis is caused due to a bacteria called as Chlamydia. Bacterial pink eye is more common among infants in Africa and Middle Eastern countries.

Other kinds of infant red eye or conjunctivitis are allergic pink eye and chemical pink eye. Allergic pink eye is generally caused by pollen or dust. It can be seasonal and symptoms such as intense itching and swelling of eyes are quite common. Chemical pink eye is caused when industrial pollutants and smoke enter the eyes.
