Hashimoto Swollen Face And Eyes  

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is under active. It is not able to produce sufficient quantity of thyroid hormones. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is due to an autoimmune reaction where the antibodies produced by the body meant for attacking viruses starts attacking the thyroid cells.

This autoimmune disorder is known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

The symptoms of hypothyroidism set in gradually and sometimes they are mistaken for depression. Individuals are known to experience the symptoms differently. However a common list of symptoms is given below.

  • Dull facial expressions
  • Hoarse voice
  • Slow speech
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Puffy and swollen face
  • Weight gain
  • Constipation
  • Sparse, coarse and dry hair
  • Coarse, dry and thick skin
  • Hand tingling or pain
  • Slow pulse
  • Muscle cramps
  • Orange colored soles or palms
  • Sides of eyebrows thin or fall out
  • Confusion
  • Increased menstrual flow

It is generally the pituitary gland which stimulates the thyroid to produce the hormones. When pituitary gland fails, it is unable to stimulate thyroid gland. Hence, this gives rise to a condition known as secondary hypothyroidism.

Puffy and swollen face and droopy eyelids are included in the above list of symptoms. Hence, a person with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis can have puffy and swollen face and droopy eyelids. The treatment for this condition includes prescription of thyroid hormones. The patient may have to take this permanently. A period check up will be required to ensure the effectiveness of the dosage.
