Peanut Butter And Salmonella

Salmonella infection is caused by food items that are handled by unclean hands under poor hygienic conditions. This is in addition to people getting infected directly with exposure to animal and bird feces. There was an outbreak of illness caused by Salmonella, which was called Salmonella Typhimurium, in the United States in 2008.

There were several cases of death due to this infection. The tests conducted revealed that the people who got infected and sick had the same genetic fingerprint of the Salmonella Typhimurium strain. This observation led to the conclusion that these people must have eaten the same contaminated food.

Peanut Butter and Salmonella:

Tests conducted in the laboratory and the epidemiological analysis helped Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to trace the source of this infection to peanut butter and peanut paste produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) at its Blakely, Georgia processing plant. Peanut paste is a concentrate of roasted peanuts and it is used by various other manufacturers in their products such as cakes, cookies, crackers, candies, cereal and ice cream.

Based on the FDA finding, the foods containing peanut butter and peanut paste produced by PCA from July 1, 2008 to the present were recalled on January 13, 2009. However, FDA further expanded its recall to include all peanut products produced on or after January 1, 2007. The recall from PCA has included all peanut products in its Blakely, Georgia processing plant. Hence, this list includes items such as peanut granules, peanut meal, dry roasted peanuts and oil roasted peanuts in addition to peanut butter and peanut paste.
