Scarlet Fever Symptoms

Scarlet fever is a type of infection that is brought on by the streptococcus bacteria. The bacterial infections caused by these particular bacteria usually give a throat infection and high fever. Also, the same bacteria cause another type of infection called the strep throat, which shares exactly the same set of symptoms, except that there would be no rashes.

Scarlet fever is distinguished the rashes and presence of the bacteria at the same time. The rashes are caused by a streak of bacteria which release a toxin. Scarlet fever is also known by the name of scarlatina.

The fever takes one to seven days to manifest. In the mean time, some of the first symptoms to occur are an itchy throat, which later develops into soar throat. At this time, the person will also develop high fever. Along with high fever, they also develop red rashes on the skin and the tongue. These rashes on the skin feel like sandpaper. They may not be itchy, but they may burn sometimes. The rash can appear on the tongue also and develops a strawberry-like appearance. Sometimes, the tongue will also swell and start hurting. Along with high fever and sore throat, abdominal pain, body pains, nausea and vomiting are common. The rashes usually appear in the armpits, the chest area and the neck.

After the treatment is started and the person starts taking antibiotics, the rash disappears in two to three days. Antibiotics are very crucial for the treatment of scarlet fever. The dosages should be started immediately once the presence of the bacteria has been confirmed through the swab test.
