Strep Throat And Your Tongue  

Strep throat is an infection caused by Group A Streptococcus bacteria. It is contagious and if not treated, it can lead to rheumatic fever, scarlet fever and kidney problems. The usual treatment for strep throat is a course of antibiotics for a period of 10 days and you will stop be contagious 24 hours after starting the treatment.

However, if you do not take treatment or stop the course of antibiotics before 10 days, the infection will keep recurring and you will be at risk of getting other complications like rheumatic fever.

One of the most common symptoms of strep throat is painful and red sore throat accompanied by white spots on the tonsils. However, strep throat and your tongue condition can also be a good indicator. Usually when you strep throat, your will be extremely red and it will have white spots, giving your tongue an appearance like a strawberry. In some cases, the tongue can be white with red spots and make your tongue look as if it is a strawberry dipped in white chocolate. A strange analogy but if you tongue looks like this, you definitely have strep throat. However, if you are still in doubt, notice the other symptoms like swollen lymph glands, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Remember strep throat infection can have serious implications if left untreated. If you notice anything strange about your tongue and have a sore throat, you should immediately visit a doctor who will take a swab from your throat to check for strep throat infection.
