Before you actually go in for a colonoscopy, you need to prepare your body for the procedure. Your doctor will tell you about the process, known as colon prep, aimed at making your colon as clear as possible so that the procedure is most effective.
The most significant part of colon prep is what you can eat and what you must absolutely avoid. The colon prep usually starts about two to four days before the procedure, and your doctor will put you on a semi-solid or completely liquid diet, depending on your condition. The basic idea is to free the body of all foods containing fiber, since the fiber that goes inside your body looks just like blood and has a tendency to stick to the walls of the digestive tract, and thus confuses the doctor.
If you doctor has put you on a semi-solid diet, make sure you do not eat anything that is red or purple in color. Broth, soup, noodles, pasta, boiled chicken and steamed fish are permissible, since all these foods contain very low fiber. For that matter you may even eat unrefined white bread.
On the other hand, if you have been advised to go on a complete liquid diet, remember it does not mean that you may consume alcoholic beverages! These are an absolute no-no, for at least a day before the procedure takes place. Drink up as much as you can, but only water, lemonade, clear soda, and tea or coffee without milk or cream.
