Fatty liver is a disease where too much fat gets accumulated in the cells of the liver.

This disease is also known as steatosis. The liver is a very important organ in the body. It is responsible for breaking down proteins, fats and carbohydrates. One fat that the liver breaks down is triglycerides, which are used in the production of new cells and producing hormones like estrogen, testosterone and adrenal hormones. When fatty liver develops, the cells of the liver have fat droplets, which are usually triglycerides.

Usually people who abuse alcohol, or who are obese and suffer from diabetes tend to develop fatty liver disease. Also, children who suffer from Reye's syndrome get develop fatty liver disease. The most common form of fatty liver disease in the US is due to alcohol abuse. However, there is another form of the disease which is known as non alcoholic steatohepatitus that develops due to obesity, diabetes, malnutrition or Reye's syndrome. The non alcoholic fatty liver can also develop due to taking certain types of medications or due to toxic chemical poisoning.

The disease has no symptoms, but in some rare cases the person can get abdominal pain, fever, jaundice or swelling in the abdominal region. Some pregnant women can also get fatty liver disease, and they may suffer from nausea, vomiting, appetite loss and experience pain in the abdomen. In addition, the women may also suffer from pre-eclampsia or eclampsia.
