What Is A Non Pyshoyic Mental Illness ?

Psychologists usually categorize mental illnesses into two broad categories. These include psychotic mental illness and non psychotic mental illness

Psychotic illnesses are mental disorders that can seriously affect the emotional, psychological thinking and behavior of the individual. These illnesses occur as a result of damage to the brain. Some notable examples of psychotic illnesses are schizophrenia and bipolar mood disorder. Non psychotic illnesses can be simply explained as an exaggerated form of general feelings that are observed by humans.

When an individual observes intense and uncontrollable feelings of sadness, despair, anxiety, fear or depression, he/she is termed to be suffering with a non-psychotic illness. These feelings tend to be so extreme that the individual finds it really difficult to perform his day-to-day chores including activities like going to work, playing or enjoying a leisure time with his/her family members. In fact, these individuals fail to maintain their relationships with their near and dear due to personal distress.

Unlike psychotic illnesses, individuals suffering with non-psychotic illnesses are quite aware that they are psychologically disturbed and are seriously concerned about that. Some examples of non psychotic illnesses include anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and acute stress disorder. Even eating disorders such as obsessive eating disorder, Bulimia nervosa and Anorexia nervosa come under the category of non psychotic illnesses.

Treatment of non psychotic illnesses is highly possible. Psychologists usually treat these sorts of illnesses with a combination of medication and psychological therapy. Medication usually involves administration of anti-psychotic and antidepressant drugs. Psychological therapy includes counseling and sessions where the patients are made to understand their illnesses and ways to manage them so that they can lead their life comfortably.
