Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder affecting thousands of Americans, and it is also a type of psychiatric disorder. A mental disorder causes eating disorders in the person. People with bulimia nervosa are obsessed with their weight, and they indulge in binge eating because they cannot fight the compulsion.

When they indulge in binge eating, they eat too much and then they start purging and vomiting so that they can get rid of the excess calories they have consumed. They cannot fight the tendency to overeat, and they are also too concerned about their weight. So, it becomes a vicious cycle of binging and purging for them. As a result, the body is deprived of several important minerals and vitamins. It starts affecting the entire body and its well being.

Several researches have been conducted on bulimia nervosa. It is estimated that 1.1 percent of the total population of women suffers from bulimia. These women experience repeated episodes of binge eating and consume excessive amount of food. They do not have control on how much they eat and end up putting on weight as a result. Then they also behave alternatively to control the weight gain like skipping meals, and using medications such as laxatives. Also, the research shows that people with bulimia are constantly worried about their weight and body. However, their eating pattern does not support their worry.

Bulimia and anorexia are both characterized as psychiatric eating disorders. Such people have effective remedies available through therapy and medications which control their cravings.
