History Of Schizophrenia

History Of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia has been a very interesting area of study for several psychiatrists over several years. However, the history of schizophrenia is rather modern. The word schizophrenia is younger than hundred years. The disorder was classified as a mental disorder for the first time in 1887 by Doctor Emile Kraepelin. However, though the word in from the newer dictionaries, it does not mean it never existed before.

History has had several characters who exhibit the features of schizophrenic disorder. In Egypt literature, it was found that some pharaohs exhibited such qualities. Also, literature from the ancient books of Greek and Roman civilizations showed that people were aware of psychological disorders. Also, several symptoms were described which would actually fit into schizophrenia.

However, before Dr. Emile classified it as a disorder, schizophrenia was considered as mental illness and people were considered mad. So the only refuge was a mental home. It was also treated as possession of ghosts by the church and they followed a religious approach to treat it. Even today, some types of schizophrenia are treated like possession. The traits can be extremely uncommon and unbelievable in nature. However, in the ancient times all kinds of psychological disorders were classified as madness. Even if a person was normal at other times, they would still be considered mad when they exhibited the traits. Today, there has been a lot of research done in the area of schizophrenia, and the research shows that it is caused by several chemical imbalances and loss of brain tissue.
