Schizophrenia Diet And Exercise

Recently done research in Australia’s research institute suggests that the combination of mental and physical exercise along with balanced diet may play a significant role in improvement of schizophrenia symptoms.

The research was done on genetically manipulated mouse as surrogate for humans that showed schizophrenia-like behaviors, including learning and memory problems and inability to process complex information.

Scientists found genetically manipulated mouse condition improved significantly when the mouse was subjected to simple mental and physical exercise like putting them on running wheels, plus giving them interesting item to smell, touch and feel. Not only did the mouse schizophrenia like symptoms were alleviated by this enrichment of environment, but a specific chemical transmitter pathway found to be abnormal in the cerebral cortex of the mouse was selectively rescued.

Anti-psychotic drug used in the treatment of schizophrenia in humans when administered to mouse showed improvement in their schizophrenia-like behavior and other memory problems. Scientists said that this discovery could pay the way for development of better treatment options for schizophrenia patients than the conventional treatment which include only Anti-psychotic medications.

Dr Anthony Hannan of Melbourne’s Howard Florey Institute feels that through this research a new class of therapeutic drugs will be developed that will co-ordinate with the effect of environmental enrichment in the nervous system to treat various mental disorder including schizophrenia and other memory problems. He further said that anti-psychotic drugs may not be the sole answer to treat brain diseases. Schizophrenic patients need optimal level of mental and physical exercise, a well balanced diet along with anti-psychotic drugs. But this research was done on genetically manipulated mice and not on human beings and there are obviously major differences in mice and human beings, and large scale clinical trials are needed to be done on humans in order to identify the impact of combination of mental and physical exercise on human beings with schizophrenia.
