The Bacteria Responsible For Rheumatic Fever Attack

You may have heard of rheumatic fever but do you know the bacteria responsible for rheumatic fever attack? Well, many people do not know. The bacteria responsible for rheumatic fever attack is known a Group A streptococcus.

Although doctors and researchers know the bacteria responsible for rheumatic fever, they still do not know what leads to development of this disease. However, it is known that one can get rheumatic fever is a strep throat infection is not treated or the person does not finish the requisite 10-day course of antibiotics.

Young children get streptococcal infections quite often and usually the infections are treated by antibiotics and they clear up within a week and the children face no complications. However, it is quite possible to get streptococcal infections without having any symptoms and it is then that complications arise and the most problematic complication is rheumatic fever.

It is believed that rheumatic fever is an autoimmune disease wherein the body's own immune system produces antibodies that end up attacking the body's cells. When the cells are killed, autoimmune disorder occurs and rheumatic fever, as mentioned earlier, is presumed to be an autoimmune disorder.

Although we know the bacteria that is responsible for rheumatic fever attack, it is quite rare to see people getting rheumatic fever, especially in the United States and other developed countries. This is because antibiotics are widely available and the bacteria can be nipped in the bud before rheumatic fever occurs or develops. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for developing countries where rheumatic fever is still rampant and this is mostly due to lack of proper healthcare and poverty.
