CT scan is a computerized technique of taking X- rays wherein electronic mapping of the concerned body part is conducted to verify the nature of the damage or injury caused to it. Research puts forth that during a single session of CT scan of the head, the brain is exposed to radiation corresponding to 300 X-rays. Therefore, it would not be wise to randomly go in for a CT scan in cases of a head injury.
One of the potential reasons for undergoing a CT scan is a serious concussion. This is a medical terminology attributed to a brain injury caused by hitting one’s head. The consequences of such a blow to the head could be grave in terms of injury to the brain inside the skull or shearing of the axon. The apparent indications of a concussion include feeling faint, headache, dizziness, sickness, and a bewildered state of mind. As a normal practice, CT scans are not used to evaluate a concussion. The patient is observed for a period of 24 to 48 hours to assess the severity of the injury. Unless the symptoms imply towards further risk, the concussion is termed as mild and heals over some time without the need of any scanning.
However, if the symptoms persist with the patient experiencing intense headache, vomiting, firmness in the neck region and other neurological indications, then a CT scan becomes mandatory to study the damage in detail. Such signs point towards a brain bleed that could have fatal consequences as well. Whenever, concussions are accompanied with skull fractures, CT scan evaluations are conducted to analyze the condition with clarity. In most cases, no treatment or casts are administered for skull fractures. Therefore, it is important to understand the nature of the injury before resorting to a CT scan. Parents should not panic at the site of a lump or bruise on the scalp as they do not suggest a brain bleed.
