Heat Wave Pneumonia

Heat Wave Pneumonia

There have been several researches conducted to study heat wave and some of them show that a heat wave could cause an outbreak of conditions like diarrhea and pneumonia. These diseases have claimed thousands of lives and most of the victims are invariably children.

Until now people thought that pneumonia is a condition that occurs only when the weather is extremely cold. However, this is not true. Pneumonia can occur under various weather conditions, including during a heat wave. In the United States, people get flu vaccines during the cold season and these vaccines are available for children and pregnant women on a priority basis. These vaccines only offer protection for that period of the year and the person is as susceptible as any other person to flu or pneumonia during the rest of the year.

The best way to protect yourself from pneumonia during a heat wave is to avoid going out in extreme hot weathers and staying indoors with the air conditioning on. When a heat wave strikes, it can affect thousands of people at one time. Also, during a heat wave there will be several out breaks of viruses as the conditions are perfect for the bacteria and viruses to proliferate. People who live in hotter climates and work outdoors should be extra careful about protecting themselves.

The key is to keep yourself hydrated and make an extra effort to drink more water. Only when the body is dehydrated people tend to get more affected by heat strokes and other related illnesses. In addition, do go from extreme heat to extreme cold. For instance, do not go from hot outdoors to an air-conditioned room as the sweat will not have time to dry. This could lead to a chest infection, which could progress to pneumonia.
