Movement Analysis Of Breaststroke

Movement analysis of breaststroke is very important for competitive swimmers and their coaches. By analyzing the movements of the stroke, coaches can figure out a way to further improve the swimmer's performance and speed. Basically movement analysis of breaststroke involves studying the velocity in meters per second. Here the velocity refers to the number of strokes the swimmer takes to reach a specified distance in a minute.

It is this velocity that makes one swimmer faster than the other and difference in velocity at different times of the swimming motion is what coaches like to figure out so that they can train their swimmer accordingly. Even when a swimmer is swimming, there is variation in the velocity during the strokes, turns and starts.

Movement analysis of breaststroke allows the coaches to see what is creating a hurdle in increasing the velocity and the movement is then modified or changed so that the swimmer can achieve greater speed and in the bargain cover greater distance.

In breaststroke, swimmer is always face down with arms extended forward and the legs extended backwards. By studying the way the arm and legs move, the swimmer and coach can then improve the swimmer's performance. Invariably the velocity of a swimmer decreases due to drag caused by the swimmer. Often this is unavoidable and a swimmer has to learn to overcome up it so that the drag does not last for too long. For example, in breaststroke there are three arm movements -- outsweep, insweep and recovery. Usually the maximum thrust occurs in insweep and the least drag occurs in the recovery phase. However, a swimmer can decrease the drag by recovering the arms over water rather than under the water. However, in order to do this, the swimmer requires a lot of power and strength.

So, also when doing the movement analysis of breaststroke, even the leg movement should be studied. The leg movement has two parts to it -- bringing the legs into position for the thrust and the insweep. When the legs come together, it should be ensured that the knees do not sink too low as it increases the drag. Movement analysis will help swimmer to overcome the drag by trying out various variants of the leg movement which are authorized.
