Many people simply refer to the word yoga and it means hatha yoga actually. Yoga was brought into formal practice by an ancient sage in India in the 15th century. This is the most popular form of yoga that is practiced today is nothing but Hatha yoga.
There are several other popular kinds of yoga that have evolved form the basic principles of Hatha yoga. Today, you can see forms of Hatha yoga being practiced under various names like power yoga, Bikram yoga, kundalini yoga and astanga yoga.
The word Hatha means the sun and the moon in ancient and archaic Sanskrit. Ha means the sun and tha means the moon. So, these yoga exercises basically involve drawing energy from the sun and the moon which are considered to be the purest form of energy. For example, the popular surya namaskar is a form of Hatha yoga. It has to be performed under the early morning sun rise so that the body is in a position to absorb the purest form of energy released from the sun.
The main purpose of yoga was to raise the kundalini. The kundalini is considered as the life source, which is located at the base of the spine. By raising the kundalini to the head, a person becomes immortal spiritually.
Yoga actually emerged on the Indian soil somewhere about 26,000 years ago in the sat yuga (era of truth) as per experts. People mainly practiced yoga during this period for spiritual liberation more than anything else.
