Initially the terms aerobic and anaerobic were used by bacteriologists to describe how bacteria lived. Those that needed oxygen were called aerobic bacteria while those who could survive without oxygen were called anaerobic bacteria.
However, the terms started being used for exercise as they started getting popular among the lay people. While most of us know what is aerobic exercise, not many people are familiar with anaerobic exercise.
Comparing aerobic vs. anaerobic exercises will actually help understand the differences between the two types of exercises and then you can decide which type is best suited for your needs and requirements.
First let us look at aerobic exercises. These are physically intensive exercises which speed up your heart rate and are performed for a long period of time, at least for 20 minutes. Activities like jogging, swimming, dancing, brisk walking and cycling are aerobic exercises. These exercises strengthen the cardiovascular system and while you are performing them, they burn the stored sugar and fat in your body to help you lose weight.
On the other hand anaerobic exercises are performed for a short duration and they help to strengthen the muscles and joints of the body. Activities like weight lifting and sprinting are anaerobic exercises.
When you start exercising for the first time, it is advisable to start out with aerobic exercises as they help with overall fitness. However, if you are already fit and have the stamina and endurance, you can start out with anaerobic exercises. Remember, for both types of exercises, you need to warm up before starting the actual exercise and then cool down after doing the exercise.
