Students from all over the world come to study in the United States of America ever year. They all need health insurance and students are often seen as risky by insurance companies.
Students usually lead erratic lives and though they are healthier compared to middle aged people their ability to pay the premium is doubted.
Students do not earn a lot so they need to choose something that fits into their budget whether they need insurance or not.
When choosing the plan, the student should choose a deductible that suits their monthly expenditure and it can be high or low. A student may think that is best if they choose a high deductible and pay a low premium because the chances of them suffering from frequent ill health are minimal. Often student health insurance plans do not fall under a specific HMO or PPO category and they can choose their doctors from the list.
For example, a student is highly likely to change the school or change a semester plan and move on to another college and another place. So it does not make any sense to give them a HMO or a PPO plan. They need something that is more flexible and would be able to transfer along with them. Also, the insurance gets activated only after paying the deductible in most cases. The insurance plan could cover several kinds of benefits like office visits, semi private rooms during hospitalization, out patient procedures, in patient services and ambulatory services and many more.
