Full time students can continue to be on their parent’s medical insurance coverage as long as they prove that they are dependant on their parents and are also full time students. Many insurance companies allow the kids to be on their parents insurance as full time students.
Other wise the regular rule followed is once the child reaches the age of 22, he or she is taken of their parents plan. The only exception to this rule is applied to the students.
However, if you are included on your parents' health insurance plan, then you have to make sure that the HMO or the PPO is available in the place you are going to college. Often students move to other cities for higher education and that is one of the biggest reasons why the parent’s insurance plan becomes unviable for them. However, being a full time student would also mean less time to work. It is also impossible to work even part time while being a full time student. Insurance policies for students are not cheap wither. So it is very difficult for a full time student to get a cheap insurance policy.
The best bet for full time students are to depend on a college or university offered plan. These are cheap and yet basic. They are capable of covering the health needs at emergencies and also basic health check up. They may not offer special benefits like a semi private room and preferred doctors. Or else, it is best option for full time students to depend on the parents HMO or PPO if there is an option that way for them. Several leading insurance companies have coverage in other cities as well.
