Absence of estrogen in the body results in an increased bone loss causing breakage of bones and osteoporosis. This problem is quite common in menopausal women where estrogen secretion is significantly low. Evista is used as a hormone therapy in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis that occurs in women as a post menopausal symptom.
Evista is an orally-administered drug that belongs to a unique class of drugs known as Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators or SERMs. Active ingredient in Evista is known as Raloxifene hydrochloride. Evista selectively binds to estrogen receptors in the bone tissue and modulates the natural effects of estrogen. However, Evista does not have any effect on the estrogen receptors present in the breast or uterus. Evista is also helpful in reducing the levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in the body.
As like any other drug of its class, Evista is also associated with certain side effects. The most common side effects due to use of Evista include abdominal pain, arthritis, breast pain, bronchitis,, hot flashes, rhinitis, flu-like syndrome, rash, muscle ache, diarrhea, dizziness, vomiting, tendon soreness, uterine discharge and urinary tract infection.
Use of Evista causes rare, but serious complications known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolus. Both these conditions are associated with an increased risk of developing blood clots in the veins. Deep vein thrombosis is a condition where blood clots are formed in the legs. Pulmonary embolism is a condition where blood clots are formed in the lungs. Another fatal condition occurring due to use of Evista is retinal vein thrombosis, where blood clots are formed inside the veins in the retina of the eye.
Evista can cause birth defects in newborn babies. Hence, this drug should not be prescribed to pregnant and lactating women.
