Duragesic patch belongs provides long lasting relief against persistent pain. Duragesic Patch consists of a high concentration of a potent Schedule II opioid antagonist known as Fentanyl. Duragesic Patch provides continuous systemic delivery of fentanyl through the skin to the patient for a period of 72 hours.
Duragesic Patch contains a very strong narcotic pain medication and hence should be kept out of reach of children or pets. These patches should be used only in patients who are already receiving some kind of opioid treatment and have demonstrated opioid tolerance. Use of Duragesic can cause some serious side effects including troubled breathing, extreme drowsiness, and shortness of breath, dizziness, confused, and swelling on the face. Other common side effects of Duragesic patch include vomiting, nausea, constipation, sleepiness, weakness and excessive sweating.
Duragesic patches should not be administered to children below the age of 2. Also, Duragesic is a USFDA Category C drug and should not be prescribed to pregnant and lactating women except in special conditions.
Duragesic can be abused in a manner similar to other opioid agonists. Duragesic should be administered only through transdermal route. Abusers have the chance of getting addicted to the drug in a way similar to morphine. Long term abuse of the drug causes serious disorders in the central nervous system.
