Neurontin, the brand name for Gabapentin, was first developed to treat epilepsy by controlling partial seizures.
Neurontin works in conjunction with other anti seizure drugs. It is now extensively used as a pain reliever especially against pain originating from neuropathic sources.
Neurontin is also used as a mood stabilizer and in treatment of bipolar disease, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders, insomnia and depression. An important use of Neurontin is in patients suffering from chronic post operative pain generally caused by nerves accidentally severed and improperly reconnected.
The side effects of Neurontin in adults are peripheral edema or swelling of the extremities, drowsiness and dizziness. These symptoms, because of high doses, are more prevalent in the aged. Cases of toxicity are rare.
Vitamin B12 is structurally the most complex of all the vitamins in the B group. It plays an important role in the formation of blood and proper functioning of the brain and nervous systems. Vitamin B12 is actively involved in the metabolism of every cell in the body, in energy production and synthesis of fatty acid. Symptoms of B12 deficiency are anemia, certain brain and nervous disorders, gastrointestinal ailments and a decrease or absence of deep muscle tendon reflex. B12 deficiency is also a cause of acute neuropathic pain.
When deficiency of B12 is diagnosed the treatment involves administration of high doses of B12 to retain a proper balance in the system. Acute neuropathic pain is often treated with Neurontin. The treatment initially starts with small doses to avoid unpleasant side effects of drowsiness, sedation and mild swelling of the ankles.
