Vitamin B3 in the form of Niacin stimulates the adrenal glands to produce sex and stress related hormones. Niacin has also proved to be effective and is prescribed in cases where circulation is defective and to reduce cholesterol. For over half a century now the effects of niacin have been known and exploited in raising HDL and reducing LDL and triglycerides in the blood. It is believed B3 also plays an important role in delaying the onset of atherosclerosis.
Vitamin B3 is one of the 8 types of Vitamin B that constitute Vitamin B complex. It comes in two forms, namely niacin and nicotinamide. The body’s requirement of Vitamin B3 is usually met through an adequate and well-balanced diet. Deficiency of Vitamin B3 is a rarity in the developed world.
Initial symptoms, in the early stages of deficiency are fatigue, vomiting, depression, canker sores and indigestion. If uncorrected, it could lead to a more severe form of disease known as Pellagra. Pellagra is typified by dementia and diarrhea, cracked and scaly skin. B3 deficiency is also diagnosed by a bright red tongue that swells accompanied with a burning sensation in the mouth. Corrective therapy includes a balanced diet fortified with niacin supplements.
However, an excess of Niacin could have adverse results like hot flushes and reddening of the skin. Vitamin B3 as niacin should be taken under medical advice only.
