Types Of Oxidation Reactions

Oxidation is a chemical process that takes place when the oxygen molecule reacts with other molecules in the air. Oxidation is also a natural process that occurs in plants, fruits and vegetables. Oxidation also takes place when carbon based fuels are brunt for example. There are two kinds of oxidation, one is the slow oxidation and the other is the rapid oxidation. They are categorized based on the level of oxidation that takes place and the amount of time it takes.

Rapid onion is a process that happens very fast. It is often a result of burning materials and even explosions are categorized as rapid oxidation. When it happens so fast, it produces light and heat energy. Even combustion is a process of oxidation. However, combustion can also take place when oxygen is not part of the process. In order to start the process of rapid oxidization, heat is needed.

Slow oxidation is a process that happens gradually. There is no heat or light involved in this process. This can be observed in fruits and vegetables which have been stored for a long time. Even rusting of iron and rotting of wood can be called as a process of slow oxidation. In this process, it is very difficult to detect heat. It may happen over a period of several days. However, the degradation is more consistent in this process. Slow oxidation can be noticed in fruits and vegetables like grapes, lettuce, cucumbers, potatoes, apples, and mushrooms. Even meats like shrimp, lobsters and crabs go through a process of slow oxidation.
