Have you ever noticed why a freshly cut apple or a potato turns brown after some time. Even if you leave it in the refrigerator it eventually turns brown. We think that it is spoilt and throw them away. However this process is known as oxidation where the oxygen molecules are reacting with other molecules and casing the discoloration. This process is also used deliberately in making items like tea, coffee, apple juice and even chocolates.
When the iron rusts or the wood is rotting, these processes take place due to the oxidation of the material. Most of the food items or materials have oxygen in them and when it reacts then there will be some type of chemical reaction. From metals to living tissues, all are all prone to the process of oxidation.What we usually call as rusting of iron is nothing but a process of oxidation. It is the chemical name for the process. It is a naturally occurring process and will happen to everything available. There is no way to prevent oxidation as such and we can only delay it by using some other forms or methods. Oxidation takes place to our tissues inside the human body also but it is not visible to us. However, oxidation that happens to our body is not good because it will create free radicals and can lead to various diseases. However, we can slow down the process by taking vitamin supplements and also eating the right foods. Eating oxidized foods is not good for health either.
