What Is The Process Of Oxidation ?

Oxidation is a naturally occurring process. When a molecule of oxygen reacts with other molecules available in the air, it is called oxidation. It happens to living beings and even inanimate objects. For instance, the rusting of iron is a process of oxidation. When the oxygen molecules in the iron react with the molecules of other gases and chemicals, the process occurs and eventually the iron turns brown.

There are two types of oxidation processes, rapid oxidation and slow oxidation. The rusting of iron, vegetables and fruits turning brown are all examples of slow oxidation. However, the rapid oxidation takes place when fuel is burnt or even in an explosion. When the molecules of oxygen react at a fast pace, then it is called rapid oxidation. However, in order to set off the process of rapid oxidation, we need heat and light and it is always an initiated process. Slow oxidation needs no initiation and it will take place at its own pace. There is no way to prevent slow oxidation because it is a naturally occurring process.

Oxidation also takes place in human beings. Our blood and tissues are made up of oxygen molecules and wherever there are oxygen molecules o the process of oxidation can take place. Doctors believe that if person’s tissues are oxidized over a period of time then it will create free radicals in the body leading to various diseases and disorders. Also, oxygen is one of the most unstable gases and it can react with almost anything that is available.
