High cholesterol levels can be found through blood test. The blood sample is taken after a fasting period of about 9 to 12 hours. However, special symptoms of high cholesterol are quite rare. It generally ends up as a serious health issue like stroke, coronary disease, myocardial infarction, commonly known as heart attack, and peripheral vascular disease.

Individuals having very high levels of cholesterol sometimes have fat deposited on the skin. This condition is called xanthoma. Cholesterol deposits are also found around the cornea of the eye as whitish edges or as yellowish patches around the eyelids. There are fat deposits observed on the tendons also which results in the formation of nodules. Rarely, yellow streaks are seen in hands due to fat deposits. Spleen enlargement is a general observation by the physicians in patients with elevated cholesterol levels. In a few cases, pancreatitis develops and this results in severe abdominal pain. Other health issues include hypertension, coronary insufficiency, atherosclerotic heart disease, developing gallstones and ischaemia (a disorder which results in a decrease in the supply of oxygen to the heart muscles).

Hence, it is advisable to check your cholesterol regularly in order to keep the levels on check and avoid severe health complications. Generally, the cholesterol levels for adults go up after they reach 20 years. Women have a high chance of developing high cholesterol levels after their menopause period which is also an indication of her increasing the risk of a heart disease or a severe stroke. In addition, if there is a family history of members having cholesterol, the descendants have a higher chance of developing high cholesterol levels during their lifetime.
