Triglycerides are fats that travel in the blood. When a person has high triglyceride levels, it is medically known as hypertriglyceridemia. These fats are produced by the liver after the calories that you intake are broken down by the liver. Invariably, the triglycerides get converted to LDL cholesterol, which as we know is bad cholesterol and responsible for heart diseases and strokes.
When you eat food, the fat portion of the food is digested and triglycerides are the end product which are released into your bloodstream. It is because of the presence of triglycerides that you find the energy to do activities. However, not all fats are broken down. A part is also stored in the body.
The normal level of triglyceride in an adult should be below 150 mg/dl. Any value above 200 mg/dl is considered to be high. If triglyceride levels are too high, a person develops an increased risk of heart diseases.
However, food is not the only reason to develop high levels of triglyceride. As the mentioned earlier, triglycerides are produced by the liver, and therefore, if a person has a liver disease, his triglyceride levels also increase. In fact, when triglyceride levels are high, doctors will invariably check a patient for any form of liver disease besides other medical conditions like diabetes, kidney disease and hypothyroidism.
While doctors find it difficult to figure out the exact cause of high triglyceride levels, it has commonly been associated with liver diseases and other medical conditions. That is why if you have elevated levels of triglycerides, you should not ignore it.
