Heart attack is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Around 1.5 million heart attacks occur each year and out of these 500,000 are fatal.
But nearly 50 percent of the people who have a heart attack, will live to lead fruitful lives; and several others will go on to get another heart attack. Doctors usually advocate preventive measures, which include changing unhealthy cholesterol filled diet to a healthy one with more fruits and vegetables.
But what do heart attack and Twinkies have to do with one another? Twinkies is sponge cake with creamy filling. It is considered to be the ultimate all-American cake. However, what people do not know is that one Twinkie has 150 calories. Eating a Twinkie everyday is a sure shot way to a heart attack. And, many people regularly eat more than one Twinkie a day.
The Twinkie was invented in 1930 by a bakery manager when trying to figure out how to save money on the use of shortcake pans, which were used only during strawberry season. James Dewar, the bakery manager came up with the now-famous Twinkie. Initially, the cake contained banana cream filling but this was discontinued during World War II, which caused a shortage of banana. Instead vanilla cream filling was used.
Today, Twinkie has 39 ingredients and many of them are chemical or artificial ingredients which help to increase the shelf-life of the cake to nearly one month. Most of these ingredients can play havoc with the body and along with the calories present in each Twinkie, it is the shortest route to getting a heart attack. In addition, batter fried Twinkies have become extremely popular during farm fairs and each fried Twinkie has a whopping 425 calories. A king-size fried Twinkie has an amazing and unheard of 700 calories and 44 grams of fat.
This is the connection between heart attack and Twinkie. Eating a Twinkie now and then is okay but eating it everyday will increase the blood cholesterol and plaque formation in the arteries, which are precursors to a heart attack.
