While the tap water contains it in lesser proportions, a cubic mile of seawater is actually known to comprise 12 billion pounds of magnesium. The mineral is usually extracted from seawater and utilized elsewhere. Its extraction process involves addition of calcium hydroxide which leads to its precipitation in the form of magnesium hydroxide.
Various forms of food contain magnesium which in turn enriches our body with the mineral. Dark green vegetables like spinach are believed to have magnesium in the highest percentage. Other food sources of magnesium include peas, almonds, seeds, unrefined whole grains, potatoes, shredded wheat cereal, and avocados. For those who are high on sweets, the good news is that magnesium is also found in chocolate pudding!
