Sometimes the physician cannot identify the cause of a neck or shoulder pain, but the dentist has the solution. The vast majority of North Americans put up with headaches, migraines, jaw pain, neck and shoulder pain for which they do not know the reason.
They are unaware that the pain is the result of jaw joint dysfunction or a bad bite. And most of the time physicians don’t have an answer to it; but a neuromuscular dentist has.
A “bad bite” may change the jaw-to-skull relationship causing the jaw to twist into a strained position. These muscles are involved in biting, chewing, talking, head posture and breathing. If the shoulder, back and neck muscles are forced to compensate for the tight, sore and contracted muscles it will cause pain. Neuromuscular dentists can relieve the strain on the jaw and the surrounding muscles by correcting the bite.
Dentists are trained to use various techniques that help improve the jaw positioning by focusing on what’s known as the “neuromuscular bite”. There are a number of treatments, but the process starts with the patient wearing an orthotic for a short period of time. Orthotic is a custom-made plastic appliance that is worn over the teeth. It does not alter a patient’s bite permanently. After wearing the appliance, if the patients symptoms go away, it can be assumed that they were caused due to poor jaw alignment. This opens several options like dental treatment or orthodontics to permanently alter the bite to the new position. Or the sufferer might wish to resort to beautiful porcelain restorations.
