Ectopic pregnancy occurs due to the settling of the fertilized egg outside the uterus. In most of the cases, it happens in the fallopian tubes.
The meaning of the word ectopic is 'out of place'. This type of pregnancy is also called tubal pregnancy as it commonly occurs in the fallopian tube. However, it may occur anywhere like the abdomen, cervix or ovaries. As this is an abnormality, the woman loses the fetus through miscarriage. For the fertilized egg, the uterus is the proper place to get the nourishment and grow. Any other place is alien to it. If it grows in any place other than uterus, it is not only dangerous to the woman, it can also cause damage to the locations where the fetus grows. So, if the fetus grows in the fallopian tube, it causes rupture in the tube and thereby damages it.
There are many reasons for ectopic pregnancy. The first and the foremost is that it is due to damage or blockage in the fallopian tube. Hence, those with damaged fallopian tube or earlier incidents of ectopic pregnancy are more likely to get ectopic pregnancy. Damage of the tube is due to infection, which is commonly called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Other contributing factors are endometriosis, scar tissue, and congenital diseases. Use of birth control contraceptives including IUDs, the morning after pill, oral contraceptives also can cause ectopic pregnancy.
It is not diagnosed until the woman complain's of pain in the lower abdominal region. The pain starts only with the rupture of the organ where the egg is implanted. Termination of the pregnancy is the only treatment to save the mother. If it is detected in the early stage of pregnancy, there other treatments to terminate the pregnancy.
