It goes without saying that the best way to be healthy is to have a healthy lifestyle and this includes eating healthily, not smoking and drinking alcohol in moderation. However, what many people, especially men, do not know is that getting regular medical checkups is also important for a healthy body and mind.
There are specific men's medical checkup that allow you to get screened and thus, providing information on what you should do and what you should not. Here are some screening tests involved in a men's medical checkup that you should also insist that your doctor does when you go for your next check up.
- Cholesterol testing is important and if you have never done it, now is the time to start having your cholesterol checked regularly. If you smoke, have a family history of heart disease or you have diabetes, then make sure that your cholesterol is tested regularly.
- Blood pressure should be checked at least once every 6 months if you are an older man and once a year if you consider yourself a matured adult. There are some races and ethnic groups that are at higher risk of getting high blood pressure and you should discuss this with your doctor.
- Diabetes test should be a part of your medical checkup, especially if you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
- Men's medical checkup is incomplete without a test for colorectal cancer and prostate testing. Make sure you have regular tests for colorectal cancer, especially if you are over 50 years of age. Get your prostate checked at least once a year, especially if you are above 50 years. If you like, you can talk to your doctor about having a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test.
