Geriatric energy conservation refers to a method that helps elderly people avoid fatigue. Basically it is using the easiest and best ways of doing work so that the elderly have the proper balance between work and rest. This way the elderly will have more energy to take part in activities that they enjoy
Researchers all over the world have been conducting research on geriatric energy conservation techniques given that the population in most countries is aging and living longer due to improve healthcare and availability of better treatments.
Research on geriatric energy conservation techniques show that the following steps need to be taken so that an elderly person can get the right balance between work, rest and leisure.
- Prioritizing is important. The elderly must look at all the activities that they have for the day and then do them in the order of importance. This means that they should also take care to include activities like taking care of themselves as well as making time for leisure activities. Prioritizing activities does away with unnecessary tasks. For example, rather than spending time drying the dishes, the elderly can leave them to air dry while they order their groceries by phone.
- Planning is important and the elderly should spend time making plans of important activities not just for the day but also for the week. This will allow them to spread their activities over a period of time rather than trying to do everything on the same day. For example, an elderly person who has to go for a social event should try not to plan too many activities for that particular day as it will wear him out.
- Pacing is important as it allows the elderly person to take rest between activities. By taking 10 minutes rest every hour will ensure that the person does not get fatigued. This rest does not have to be bed rest. It can be sitting and reading the newspaper, listening to music or lying down for some time.
- Posture plays an important role as having a bad posture can tire you out. Good posture is not about standing or sitting correctly. Rather it means using the muscles within their means without expending too much energy. This means having things at the correct height so that they are easier to reach out to, doing certain activities while sitting or sliding things rather than trying to lift them.
