Hip replacement is a boon to people who have arthritis or other similar debilitating bone disease. However, each patient has a different experience after hip replacement. Here are some patient experiences with hip replacement.
Experience of Brownie, female aged 55-64 -- She had a total hip replacement done on December 15, 2008. She was diagnosed with a blood clot behind the knee. Her medicine dosage was increased. She was on the couch with elevated leg for 12 days before she could feel relief in the leg. She feels it could have been better if she had taken control of her care.
Experience of Hal47, male aged 61 -- He had a left hip replacement surgery on September 29, 2008. He started feeling improvement after 2 weeks for a period of 4 weeks. Beyond that there was no improvement. He feels numbness for eight inches on the left thigh. He experiences pain in the thigh area when he is lying down but the pain gets reduced when he is walking. This is opposite of what he was experiencing prior to surgery. He feels that it may not get better.
Experience of Poet Jason, male aged 55-64 -- He had his right hip replacement done in 1982. That failed within two months. He had a second replacement in 1983. That replacement also failed by becoming very painful and loose. He had the third replacement in 1985. He has continued with it for 23 years. He had always experienced pain. Pain has become worse in the last two years and more so in the last five months. Now he is unable to put any weight on his right leg. Now he is scared of the fourth replacement.
Experience of Gail, female aged 65-74 -- She had her right hip replaced in March 2008. She had a few weeks of home therapy. Her recovery has been good. In May, she could dance at her friend’s wedding. She had a surgery in December 2008 to get her left hip replaced. This time she had some problem with constipation and then diarrhea for which she had to be hospitalized. After that she has recovered and she is doing well. She is quite happy with the outcome.
