A death of a spouse is not something that every person can deal with and apart from the fact that they have lost their life companion there are hundreds of other things to deal with. However, every person who is a citizen of the United States or has been working for most of the life has some benefits to receive monetarily. Especially, if he or she has been the wage earner, then in their death there are definitely some benefits that the other family members are bound to receive.
Children and spouses do get benefits form the person who is dead and this is something they should know. However, if nobody is claiming for them, then the chances are they may not get it too.
Most people think that social security is only a retirement benefit and actually it is not so. Some of the Social Security benefits also include a survivor's insurance for workers and their families. It can be equivalent to the individual life insurance. As a person works and pays taxes, he or she becomes eligible for some reward points and they are forwarded to the survivors. People who can get such benefits are the widow or the widower, unmarried children and dependant parents.
There are also some specified benefits for divorced spouses and the rules are listed in detail on the social security website. Also, how much benefits you get depends on the time you spent working before the death and also the age. The age of the survivor is also taken into count.
